Labor Law Attorneys in Iowa & Nebraska
At Smith and McElwain, our law offices—located in both Sioux City and Des Moines, Iowa—offer you the services of experienced labor law attorneys who specialize in workers’ compensation, labor, and employment law. We have a long tradition of representing injured workers, your families, and your unions
throughout Iowa and eastern Nebraska.
Our roots run deep. Over sixty years ago, Harry H. Smith, a young lawyer just out of the U.S. Navy, opened his law office door for Siouxland’s working families and their unions. In time, he would represent packinghouse workers, nurses, carpenters, electricians, machinists, teachers, plumbers, teamsters, laborers, and untold others who comprised the backbone of our community.
These deep roots allowed a strong growth into the future. In 1973, Harry’s son, MacDonald Smith, came to work with his father after graduating from the University of Iowa Law School. He soon specialized in labor law, and ever since, Mac has represented numerous labor unions in Iowa and eastern Nebraska in their efforts to improve the lives of working men and women.
Ten years later, in 1983, Dennis McElwain, another Iowa law graduate, joined the firm. Dennis went on to specialize in workers’ compensation law. Dennis is licensed to practice law in both Iowa and Nebraska, and over the years, he has assisted thousands of injured workers and their families in fighting for the prompt medical care and money benefits they deserve.
In 2004, Harry’s grandson and Mac’s son, Jay Smith—also an Iowa law graduate— joined the firm. In line with the family pedigree, Jay specializes in labor law. We opened an office in Des Moines in 2006, providing Jay and the firm a more centralized location to better serve the needs of our clients.
Together, with the assistance of our dedicated staff, we carry on Harry’s tradition. Though our geographic range has grown, and our specialization became more focused, our purpose remains true: to provide the best legal representation we can for working men and women in our community.
We focus on only the two following practice areas so that we can offer the best services:
